Through a special arrangement with Betty Hannstein Adams, the owner
of Finca Oriflama in Southwestern Guatemala, we have acquired this
excellent, high-grown coffee. Oriflama is grown under a canopy of
trees using environmentally-sound farming practices, while workers
receive a fair wage, social security, and education for their children.
We think Oriflama is the ideal Central American coffee, with a bright
flowery flavor and a pleasant, sweet aroma with hints of citrus.
Tuesday…Organic Peruvian La Florida
On the northeastern slopes of the Peruvian Andes, many indigenous
farmers grow crops without the use of agri-chemicals, just like their
Incan ancestors did centuries ago. Although the coffee is their only
commercial crop, it brings them a premium because of its high quality
and their commitment to organic growing practices. La Florida features
a medium body and bright taste and is shade grown.
Wednesday…Coffee of the Month
Ask your extremely friendly barista for details.
Thursday…Organic Timor Maubisse
In the wake of their country’s 1999 referendum on independence
from Indonesia and the ensuing political turmoil, coffee producers
in East Timor have regrouped under a USAID grant designed to jump
start the rural economy. The focus on quality and continuation of
organic farming practices have resulted in higher premiums for their
coffee, which has the body of a Sumatran and the nutty and complex
flavor of a Java. The Maubisse is a sparkling surprise that Alterra
is ver pleased to offer.
Friday…Panama La Torcaza Estate
Situated in the extreme western region of Panama, La
Torcaza Estate prduces the coffee on the southwestern slope of the
Baru Volcano, 4,500 feet above sea level. The rich soil and altitude
provide ideal growing conditions and the four Janson brothers who
run La Torcaza have implemented a number of environmentally-conscious
farming practices. Their coffee is know for possessing a delicate,
floral aroma, a light yet balanced acidity, and a unique buttery
taste.
Saturday…Brazil Traditional Dry
This coffee comes to us from the Fazenda Vista Alegre,
owned and operated by the Andrade family since 1898. Located in
the state of Minas Gerais in southwestern Brazil, Vista Alegre employs
a traditional “dry” method to process the coffee, in
which the harvested cherries are spread on large patios to dry in
the sun. Our roast is tailored specifically to complement the heavy
body and almost tobacco-like flavor.
Sunday…Organic Blue Heeler
Not many roasters have a company mascot like our dog Mina, an Australian
Blue Heeler, who has been with Alterra since the company’s
inception. This kind of dedication merits some recognition, and
as such, we offer Organic Blue Heeler by combining regular and dark-roasted
Organic Sumatran Gayo Mountain for a blend that almost as well-behaved
as Mina.
